The Media Player Classic is a lightweight, open-source media player that mimics the look and feel of the old Windows Media Player (version 6), but at the same time incorporates the power and features of modern media players. Contrary to popular belief the Media Player Classic is not developed by Microsoft but rather as an open-source project hosted at SourceForge.net; it is usually the go-to choice for most users who want to use a no-nonsense media player that works well with various codecs and DirectShow filters. To that end, the Media Player Classic is a mainstay of such codec packs like K-Lite Codec Pack (select editions) and the Community Codec Pack. The Media Player Classic was originally closed-source, but was later licensed under the GNU General Public License.
Media Player Classic (MPC) has a lot of attractive features that make it ideal for video enthusiasts. It supports VCD, SVCD, and DVD playback, and has built-in codecs for MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 file formats, with support for subtitles and MP2, AC3, and DTS audio, among others. It also supports hardware acceleration for newer video cards, TV tuner recording if such a device is installed, and support for the OGM and Matroska container formats.
